I often get asked for ideas for easy, astronomy-related activities that can be done with kids, and one of my favorites is the edible solar system. It’s easy to set up—you just need one trip to the grocery store beforehand so it can be done on relatively short notice. It works for most age groups since you can vary the level of the material you present.

What Causes Wildfires?

Although three weeks have passed since the fire started, there remain over 1,000 firefighters and 50 helicopters in Fort McMurray, Canada to fight the wildfire raging there. One thousand more firefighters are expected in the next week and the fire remains “out of control.” The fire covers more than 522,000 hectares, but is no longer considered a threat to nearby communities.

What Does It Mean for Mars to Be in 'Full Opposition'?

On May 22, 2016, Mars will be in what is known as “full opposition.” At this time, the Sun, the Earth, and Mars will sit in a straight line with the Earth directly between our planetary neighbor and our star. All planets that are farther from the Sun than the Earth pass through similar opposition points.
